Don Bourn is a true visionary and has the track record to prove it. As a founding principal of lumière hotel group, Mr. Bourn learned the basics of teamwork and success as a University of Nebraska football player under the legendary coach, Tom Osborne. After a successful start to his career with Peat, Marwick and Mitchell and Trammell Crow Company, Mr. Bourn started Bourn Companies and Bourn Partners in Tucson, Arizona. His ventures have been extremely successful as, throughout the nearly one billion dollars of projects and transactions, Don and his team have consistently provided superior returns for his financial partners, enhanced the communities in which he has done business, and delivered innovative solutions to his clients.

kevin m. kiernan, principal, board member
As a founding principal, Kevin Kiernan brings 25 years of construction and real estate development expertise to the lumière team. His skill set includes extensive experience in:

  • site selection
  • feasibility studies
  • risk mitigation strategies
  • entitlement
  • design
  • project and construction management
  • value engineering

Mr. Kiernan not only has spearheaded the initial lumière projects in Telluride, Colorado and Carlsbad, California but, along with Mr. Bourn, has developed over $500 million in real estate since 1995. Kiernan’s client list is laden with heavyweight nameplates such as FedEx, Home Depot, Office Depot, University of Phoenix and the Loews Ventana Canyon.

matthew d. nuss, president, principal, board member
Matthew Nuss leads the hotel operations and development side of the lumière team. With nearly 20 years of experience in the upper/upscale and luxury segments, Matthew has enjoyed success on the financial as well as the operations side at some of the great hotels in the country:

  • Westin St. Francis, Westin Crown Center, Westin Washington, D.C., and Westin Cypress Creek
  • Omni Houston, Omni Mandalay, Omni Royal Orleans, Omni Berkshire Place, Omni Austin, Omni Tucson National Resort and Spa, Omni CNN Center, and Omni Parker House
  • Hotel Valencia Riverwalk and Hotel Valencia Santana Row

After being named ideal general manager of the year for customer service in 2000 with Omni Hotels, Nuss joined the fledgling Valencia Group as senior principle of the management company, Hotel Valencia Corporation. Under Nuss’s leadership, the upstart brand, Hotel Valencia, quickly became a market leader in San Antonio, Texas and San Jose, California, as well as enjoying national critical acclaim. Nuss brings with him a proven track record of success in all facets of hotel operations and marketing as well as extensive brand development and positioning experience.

toufic edward abi-aad, chief financial officer, principal, board member
As chief investment officer of Bourn Companies and Lumiere, Toufic Abi-Aad is charged with overseeing all aspects of the capital markets process, including sourcing debt and equity partners and collaborating with the company’s acquisition and disposition team. In that capacity, he has directed nearly $1B of real estate investment and sales transactions. Additionally, Abi-Aad is an active participant on the company’s executive team helping set strategy.

Prior to joining Bourn Companies in the spring of 2000, Abi-Aad began his career at Motorola. Mr. Abi-Aad holds dual finance and accounting undergraduate degrees, as well as a master’s degree in business administration degree from the Eller School of Business at the University of Arizona.

larry b. magnan, development and asset management director, board member
Larry Magnan provides development services to the lumière team mainly in the form of site and market identification as well as deal structure and product guidance as a member of lumière’s board. Mr. Magnan’s resume is strong to say the least with over 40 years of business success in prominent positions such as:

  • president and c.e.o., Westin Hotels and Resorts which culminated a 25 year career of experience as one of Westin’s key cogs in its worldwide expansion in the 1980s and 1990s as well as transitioning the company to a new ownership group, the Aoki Corporation
  • founder of Select Asset Management which provided invaluable experience to Starwood Capital in its takeover of Westin Hotels and Resorts
  • president and c.e.o. of Cruise Holdings and Premier Cruises during which time Mr. Magnan guided the consolidation of a fleet of cruise ships to create the fifth largest cruise company in the world

jack l. gaines, development and asset management director, board member
Jack Gaines will be working in concert with Mr. Magnan to further the lumière brand. In addition, Mr. Gaines will be providing expert guidance to the lumière team as a member of its board. Mr. Gaines brings a pedigree of hospitality management and development that will no doubt be an invaluable resource to the lumière team:

  • senior vice president, Westin Hotel and Resorts, where Mr. Gaines spent a progressively successful 27 year operations career and developed such hotels as Westin La Paloma and Westin Walt Disney World Swan
  • president, Opryland Hotel and Attractions, Mr. Gaines led the Nashville icon on the operations side as well as directed its project development initiatives
  • senior vice president/director of operations, Omni Hotels, with 16 owned and managed hotels along with 8 franchised properties, Mr. Gaines was responsible for all aspects of the company’s day to day operations
